Bicycles are a very common daily means of transportation in Japan. At the same time, there are local rules that many newcomers do not know.
Buying a bicycle
You can buy one at home centers, sports stores, electronics retailers, and secondhand shops.
Anti-theft registration is required
When you buy a bicycle, anti-theft registration is legally required. The store can usually do it for a small fee. Keep the registration document in a safe place.
Basic cycling rules
- In principle, ride on the left side of the road
- Sidewalk riding is only allowed in specific situations, and pedestrians still come first
Prohibited or risky behavior
- Using a smartphone while riding
- Riding with both ears covered by headphones in some areas
- Riding under the influence of alcohol
- Holding an umbrella while riding
Parking rules
If you leave your bicycle outside designated parking areas, it may be removed. Retrieving it can cost money.
Locks
Bicycle theft is common. Use not only the built-in lock, but also an extra cable lock if possible.
