About the Residence Card

The residence card is essential for foreign residents in Japan. Learn about updates, address changes, and what to do if it is lost.

The residence card is the ID card issued to mid- to long-term foreign residents in Japan. It shows your name, nationality, status of residence, and period of stay.

How you receive it

It is usually issued at immigration when you enter Japan through a major airport.

Address information

The back of the card has a section for your address. After you complete address registration, the local office prints your address there. If you move, you must update it within 14 days.

You must carry it

If you are 16 or older, you are generally required to carry your residence card when you go out.

Renewal

The card has an expiration date tied to your period of stay. Depending on your status, you can often begin renewal procedures about three months before expiration. Renewal is handled through the Immigration Services Agency office.

If you move

1. File the move-in notification at your new city or ward office

2. Have the new address printed on the back of your residence card

If it is lost or stolen

If your card is lost or stolen, report it to the police and then notify the Immigration Services Agency within 14 days.

Changing status of residence

If your circumstances change because of work, marriage, or starting a business, you may need to apply to change your status of residence. Doing different activities without the correct status can be illegal.
