What My Number Is

A practical explanation of Japan’s individual number system and what foreign residents need to know about it.

My Number is a 12-digit personal identification number assigned to everyone living in Japan, including foreign residents who complete address registration.

When you receive it

After you finish address registration, a notification is usually mailed to your registered address in about two to three weeks. If you are often away from home, make sure you watch for missed-delivery notices.

My Number notice vs. My Number card

  • Notification document: A paper notice that shows your number
  • My Number card: An optional IC card with your photo that can be used as identification

You can usually apply for the card with the QR code included in the notification. Issuance often takes one to two months.

When it is used

  • Starting or changing jobs
  • Opening a bank account at some banks
  • National Health Insurance and pension procedures
  • Tax filing, especially electronic filing
  • Obtaining official documents at convenience stores if you have the card

Advantages of the My Number card

  • Useful as an ID if you do not have a Japanese driver’s license
  • Can be used as a health insurance card in some places
  • Can allow you to print official documents such as a resident certificate at convenience stores

Important caution

My Number is sensitive personal information. Do not give it to suspicious websites or unknown people. Employers asking for it for legitimate administrative reasons is normal.
