How to Use a Japanese Washing Machine
Learn the most common Japanese labels on a top-loading washing machine and the basics of doing laundry in Japan.
Top-loading washing machines are still very common in Japan, and the control panel is often only in Japanese. You can use most machines without trouble once you understand the main steps.
Basic steps
1. Put in the laundry. Do not overfill the drum. Around 70 to 80 percent full is a good guideline.
2. Add detergent, either to the detergent tray or directly onto the clothes, depending on the machine.
3. Choose a cycle.
4. Press start.
Common cycle names
- 標準 or 通常: Normal everyday cycle
- おいそぎ or スピード: Quick wash for lightly soiled clothes
- 手洗い or ドライ: Gentle cycle for delicate clothing
- 毛布 or 大物: Blankets or large items
- 槽洗浄: Drum-cleaning cycle, recommended about once a month
Types of detergent
- Liquid detergent: Easy to dissolve and widely used
- Powder detergent: Stronger cleaning power in some cases
- Fabric softener: Added to a separate compartment and used in addition to detergent
Indoor drying
Because many people in Japan cannot dry laundry outdoors every day, indoor drying is very common. A dehumidifier can make indoor drying much faster.
Preventing mold in the drum
Japan’s humid climate makes mold inside the drum more likely. Use the drum-cleaning cycle or a washing machine cleaner about once a month.
