Day 2โ3 โ First Important Tasks
Get Your My Number
Japanโs personal ID number system: when you receive it and when you may need it.
My Number is Japan's 12-digit personal identification number for residents, including foreign residents. For Americans, the closest comparison is a Social Security number, although the systems are not identical.
How you receive it
After you complete residence registration, a notification is mailed to your registered address a few weeks later. You usually do not need to apply separately just to receive the number.
Optional My Number card
You can also apply for the photo ID card version. It is useful because:
- It can work as everyday ID
- It is used for some online government procedures
- It helps with online tax filing
- In many areas, it lets you print official documents at convenience stores
When you may need it
- Employment paperwork
- Some banking procedures
- Tax filing
- Health insurance procedures
- Various government services
Treat your My Number carefully and do not provide it to suspicious websites or unofficial requests.
