Get Connected — SIM, eSIM, and Pocket WiFi
How to choose your communication setup in Japan for the first few days and for longer stays.
Japan's mobile network quality is strong, but the number of options and Japanese-only signup pages can make it confusing at first. Here is the simplest way to think about it.
Option 1: travel SIM for the first 1 to 2 weeks
Easy to buy at airports, convenience stores, or electronics stores. Usually no Japanese needed. Many are data-only.
Option 2: eSIM
Best if your phone supports it. You can buy and activate it before you leave, then land in Japan already connected.
Option 3: pocket WiFi
Useful if you are arriving with family or multiple devices. It can connect several devices at once, but it needs charging and adds one more thing to carry.
For longer stays
Once your residence registration and bank account are in place, switching to a low-cost monthly Japanese SIM is usually the best value.
