Garbage Rules and Basic Daily-Life Etiquette

Trash sorting in Japan is strict and local. If you get it wrong, it can create neighbor problems quickly.

โ„น๏ธ If you live in company housing or a dorm

The building manager may explain the trash rules for you. Check with them first.

Japanโ€™s garbage rules are one of the first daily-life differences many newcomers notice. The rules are strict, local, and tied closely to neighborhood expectations.

Basic categories

  • Burnable trash
  • Non-burnable trash
  • Recyclables such as cans, bottles, PET bottles, and cardboard
  • Oversized trash that requires advance booking and a paid disposal sticker

Collection days

Each category has its own collection day. You need to follow the schedule for your ward, city, or building.

Trash bags

Some municipalities require official designated bags, while others allow ordinary clear or semi-clear bags.

Important daily habits

  • Put trash out on the morning of collection day unless your building has a 24-hour trash area
  • Do not leave large appliances out as normal garbage
  • Check how to dispose of cardboard from furniture or appliance deliveries

When in doubt, ask the building manager or a nearby resident early. It is much easier than correcting mistakes later.
