Your First Night โ What Happens and What You Need Right Away
Most Japanese apartments are handed over almost completely empty. This guide explains what to expect on day one.
If you are moving into a regular Japanese apartment rather than a hotel or furnished unit, your first night may feel surprisingly bare. Many rentals are handed over with almost nothing inside.
Things that are often not included
- Curtains or blinds
- Ceiling light fixtures
- Major appliances such as a refrigerator or washing machine
- Basic consumables like toilet paper or soap
This does not mean the apartment is low quality. It is simply normal in Japan.
What to buy first on Day 1
A nearby convenience store can cover the minimum:
- Towels
- Toiletries
- Food and drinks
- Small emergency items like charging cables
For bigger essentials, Don Quijote is often the fastest one-stop option.
Temporary bedding
If your bedding has not arrived yet, a cheap blanket or sleeping bag from Don Quijote or a 100-yen shop can get you through the first night.
Lighting
If the room has no light fixture yet, an inexpensive LED lantern can help until you buy the proper ceiling light.
