A Japanese bank account becomes important quickly for salary payments, rent, and utility payments. For foreign residents, opening one can be a little more complicated than in the US.

Banks that are often easier for new residents

  • Japan Post Bank
  • Rakuten Bank

Large traditional banks may ask for proof that you have lived in Japan for six months or more.

What to know

  • Checks are not part of normal daily banking in Japan
  • Bank transfer is a standard payment method
