Day 1 — Arrival Day
How to Get from the Airport to Your Home
Narita or Haneda, train or bus, cheap or easy: here is how to choose without wasting money.
There are two main international airports around Tokyo: Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND). Many long-haul US flights arrive at Narita. Haneda is closer to central Tokyo and easier once you land.
From Narita
- Narita Express (N'EX): the fastest option. About 60 minutes to Shinjuku and usually around 3,000 to 4,000 yen
- Limousine bus: slower than the train, but sometimes easier if it stops near your neighborhood. Usually around 3,000 to 4,000 yen
- Taxi: very expensive from Narita to central Tokyo. It can easily exceed 20,000 yen and is rarely the best choice
From Haneda
Haneda is much closer to the city center. Keikyu Line or Tokyo Monorail usually gets you into the city in 30 to 40 minutes for around 400 to 700 yen.
If you have a lot of luggage
Yamato Transport's delivery service can ship your luggage from the airport directly to your new address. If you are arriving with multiple large suitcases, this is often worth it.
IC card tip
You can buy a Suica card at the airport. It makes the first train ride and your first convenience store purchase much easier.
