Do You Need Pocket Wi-Fi?
Understand how mobile Wi-Fi routers work in Japan and when they make sense compared with a SIM card.
Pocket Wi-Fi is a mobile router with a SIM inside it. It lets multiple devices connect to the internet at the same time.
Who it can be useful for
- Families or groups traveling or moving together
- People who want to connect tablets or laptops that depend on Wi-Fi
- People whose phone does not support eSIM but still want portable internet
Rental vs. purchase
- Rental: Often picked up at the airport and returned before departure. Good for short stays.
- Purchase or contract: Better for longer stays, but more expensive and more effort to manage.
Disadvantages
- It needs charging, and if the battery dies, every connected device loses internet
- Rentals need to be returned
- If you only use one smartphone, a personal SIM is often simpler and cheaper
For a single long-term resident
If you mainly use one phone, a normal SIM plan is usually more practical. For home internet, people more often sign up for fiber service or use a home router.
Home internet
Common options include fixed fiber internet and SIM-based home routers such as SoftBank Air or au HOME 5G. A home router can be useful early on because it often does not require installation work.
