Types of Cashless Payment in Japan

Understand the main cashless payment methods in Japan, including IC cards, credit cards, and QR payments.

Japan used to be described as a cash-based society, but cashless payment has expanded quickly in recent years. There are several systems, and each is useful in different situations.

1. IC cards such as Suica and Pasmo

These are one of the best first tools to set up. They are used for trains and buses, but also at convenience stores, supermarkets, and vending machines.

  • Can be used as a physical card or in some smartphone apps
  • Easy to charge at stations, convenience stores, or through apps
  • Very useful for small everyday purchases

2. Credit cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in shopping malls, larger supermarkets, hotels, and online stores.

  • Contactless payment is becoming more common
  • Small local restaurants and some small shops may still be cash only

3. QR payment apps

Apps such as PayPay, d-barai, and Rakuten Pay are common.

  • Often offer points or promotions
  • Usually require app setup and sometimes a Japanese phone number
  • Store coverage varies, but PayPay is especially widespread

4. Debit cards

These are linked directly to your bank account and can be useful if you do not want a credit card.

A practical approach for your first month

  • Small everyday spending: IC card
  • Online shopping or larger purchases: credit card
  • Cash: still important, especially for smaller shops or places that do not accept digital payment
